The Demolition has begun

The building formerly known as the Triple Crown Lounge has been fully leveled to the ground.

Just in time for the 4th of July parade. How festive.

According to an email I received, doing this during the 4th parade is causing some public backlash:

Apparently, the fact that they started demolition today - right before the 4th of July - has turned a lot of people against them. XXX was listening to one of the local talk radio shows, and people are complaining that they're `ruining downtown" just in time for the holiday. People have said that they weren't against it before, but they sure are now. Also, lots of comments about their reputation and concerns about what's going to happen to downtown.

Make way for the Vertical Lexington Mall.

Oh, and it looks like I'm getting under some people's skin. The unhinged Larry Chiles' son commented on my post about the CADRB meeting last Wednesday and had this to say:

Instead of posting a sloppy, vulgar, and radically anti-growth blog at 1 in the morning, why don't you get some sleep and try to find a real job the next day?

My reply:

Hey, vulgar and sloppy is my specialty, don't knock it.

A real job? Seriously? Got one, and it's certainly not my sloppy, vulgar and widely read and respected blog, too.

I don't really see how building a big, ugly and EMPTY vertical Lexington Mall is going to help our economy. If the Webbs wanted to really use their $ to help downtown, they would focus on building to scale and building to actually encourage people to live downtown instead of building something gawdy to satisfy Dudley's ego and a suite that the sheik can stay in when in Lexington. This won't even be near finished for the Equestrian Games, and the hotel itself will be half filled when complete, just like our other hotels downtown. The luxury condos? I'd be shocked if more than 10% were filled.

Is it too much to ask to design your project for the people who live here, instead of the people here for a convention for a couple day? Is it too much to ask for our tax dollars not to go to a Vertical Lexington Mall?

Oh, and say hi to Daddy "Bagman" Chiles for me.

Good Times.

I've noticed a trend in people feigning outrage using the world "vulgar." I guess the irony of constructing a building that is *actually* vulgar (both literally and figuratively) is lost, eh? Fetch me my fainting couch!

some people don't like it when you're vulgar. others do. generally, I'm one of those that do. most of all, I appreciate it when you are vulgar to the suits who come trolling around in the blogosphere. thanks Joe!

I'm a conservative and usually "pro-growth", but this whole deal smells to high heaven. Lexington taxpayers should revolt if a dime of taxpayer money goes to this testimony to Webb conceit and grandiosity. Does anyone really believe a truly dull downtown is going to be improved with this albatross? Keep up the fight even after it's over.

TCL hasn't been "fully" leveled. The first floor was still there as of 7pm. Of course the second floor has been collapsed on top of it and the building next door is gone, but still, accuracy, yo.
