Per his latest campaign tweet, Lt. Dan is excited that Minnesota finally has its second senator in Al Franken.
I can't help but wonder why Lt. Dan is so excited, considering he has more in common with Norm Coleman than Al Franken. In the 2008 campaign, Al Franken made supporting a renewable energy future for America a priority, and will provide the crucial 60th Democrat in the Senate in order to bring forth a vote on cap-and-trade. Lt. Dan, for what it's worth, wouldn't be voting for cap-and-trade were he in the Senate today.
Al Franken campaigned in favor of the rights of workers to unionize without interference from corporate bosses. Lt. Dan's campaign is supported by a number of anti-union coal comapnies and he has a history of supporting non-union businesses. Not to mention that Lt. Dan's opponent, Attorney General Jack Conway, has picked up every major union endorsement thusfar.
Al Franken is a long-time proponent of equality for gay and lesbian citizens. Lt. Dan, as we all know, sponsored the amendment that has been a scar on our state's constitution since 2004. Al Franken supports universal health care, and while Lt. Dan likes to tout his experience in medicine, he has been surprisingly mum on President Obama's health care proposal.
No doubt, Senator Al Franken and Lt. Dan don't have much in common. So why is Lt. Dan so excited?

Does Lt. Dan not understand the irony?

Thrilled to have something to tweet about that doesn't involve pussy-hound Mark Sanford?
1. Mongiardo follows Obama's position on coal's role in our 'energy future.'
2. Cap and trade will destroy our economy in KY. Conway won't even talk about the bill. At least Dan's given his opinion.
3. Obama has the same opinion on gay marriage as Dan.
4. Mongiardo supported Obama early for his commitment to affordable healthcare. He helped open a free clinic E. KY, and you think he's a healthcare opponent?!
Check your facts before you attack people. Oh wait, you're just a blogger!
1. No he doesn't
2. Yes, that is the talking point of Lt. Dan, the Republican Party and Fox News.
3. No, not even close. Dan co-sponsored legislation to amend KY's constitution so that same-sex marriage AND civil union or anything resmebling it are outlawed. President Obama is FOR civil unions, as oppposed to Dan, who thinks it is worth amending our Constitution in order to OUTLAW civil unions.
4. Yes, that is exactly what I think.
But what do you care about facts, you're just an anonymous commenter...
if by "Cap and trade will destroy our economy in KY" you mean kill the coal industry and bring in new, long-term, well-paying jobs for all Kentuckians (not just the <1% involved in the coal industry) that don't contribute directly to the destruction of our state's landscape and earth's climate, then yes, that's exactly what it will do.
also, no rebuttal on Lt. Dan being anti-labor?
while I'm at it, Obama isn't right all the time, so using him as a crutch for Lt. Dan's backasswards policies is no excuse. And even if Lt. Dan opened a free clinic, that doesn't give him a pass at refusing to support public healthcare. Bill Frist was a medical doctor, but that didn't make his opinion that AIDS could be transmitted through tears or sweat any more correct. Lt. Dan opening a free clinic but refusing to support the public option is like me giving a kid on the street five dollars and saying that I've cured childhood poverty the whole world over.
Is it too much to ask that Conway say point blank what he thinks about cap and trade? It's a pretty timely issue and kind of important for a coal state.
honestly, it isn't. But given the fact that Jack has publicly stated his belief that economic development that disregards the well-being of the environment isn't really development at all, it's probably safe to say he supports cap-and-trade.
If our state's leaders decided to get off the King Coal payroll and invest in renewable energy, cap-and-trade could make KY a leader in producing energy (and jobs) without negatively affecting our environment. The only thing hurting KY in this deal is our leader's stubborn insistence that coal is the only way to go.
the big irony here is that the cap and trade bill gives at least $10 billion to clean coal technology development, which mongiardo "claims" that he supports.
personally, i think "clean coal" is a lost cause unicorn hunting expedition, but it's funny that dan apparently thinks that clean coal will kill ky.
or maybe he hasn't actually read the bill, and he's just been watching fox news over the past couple of weeks?
You people have no idea how poor this state is and how much cap and trade will cost this state. We have the 3rd lowest electric rates in the USA and still can't attract businesses to Kentucky.
Our poor cannot afford the electric bills now and sure cannot after cap and trade.
Don't forget for the last 11 years global mean temps have been going down while CO2 has increased mainly due to China and India, not the USA
"Don't forget for the last 11 years global mean temps have been going down while CO2 has increased mainly due to China and India, not the USA"
Congratulations! You've officially won the stupidest comment in the history of comments on this blog!
maybe the fact that low electric rates haven't lured businesses here means that low electric rates have nothing to do with attracting out of town businesses? But why would we want to put our state's citizens at the whims of anyone - the coal companies whose offices are out of state, oil from out of the country or the owners of manufacturing companies? why not a little more emphasis on self-sufficiency, both in producing renewable energy and economic development? oh yeah, mostly because that doesn't jive with maximizing profits for big business.
Also, cut out the lame attempts at denying global warming. The only reason avg. temperatures have been going down for the past 11 years is that 1998 was the hottest recorded year in earth's history. But compared to every year prior to 1998, we're still warming. nice try though...
