Lt. Col. Horne rebuts McCain's ridiculous Anbar province claim

Yesterday, John McCain made the absolutely ridiculous claim that the Anbar province "awakening" was due to the surge. This "awakening" happened months before the surge was even proposed. This once again shows that John McCain is either willing to say anything to get elected, or as he has shown repeatedly, he just has no idea what he's even talking about anymore.

Lt. Col. Andrew Horne just gave me a statement on McCain's ridiculous claim. Horne actually served in Anbar province, so he knows as well as anyone that McCain is completely off base.

The turn of Anbar is a result of the awakening that started in the Fall of 2006 months before the surge was even suggested by Petraus. From my friends who were on the ground at that time, it was attributed in part to the Sunnis belief that we would be leaving soon. In essence, the Iraqis were listening closely to the campaigning during the mid-term elections and this gave some of them hope that we really didn’t want to take over their country, and spurred others to action to get a handle on AQI while we were still around. To attribute this to the surge is comical since extra troops were never sent to Anbar.

And it's nice to know that CBS News is there to cover up McCain's ridiculous claim.

Waterboarding is torture. Duh.

I once asked Lt. Col. Andrew Horne what he thought about people who said that waterboarding wasn't torture. He said he'd love to demonstrate it on them personally and they'd change their tune after about 15 seconds.

Well, Christopher Hitchens took the challenge and now he agrees. It's torture. As he says- "if waterboarding isn't torture, there's no such thing as torture".

Big Oil Anne

I get endless pleasure out of the delusions of the right-wing here in Kentucky that think Anne Northup is going to even come within ten points of John Yarmuth this Fall. This thing is going to be a bloodbath, and I'm going to enjoy every second of it.

#1- She proved during her stay in Congress that she is mini-Bush, and Louisville knows that Bush is the worst damned president ever. Who in their right mind thinks that we want to continue on that path of failed leadership when they can keep John Yarmuth? As her primary opponent Chris Theineman pointed out yesterday, Northup voted with GWB 91% of the time. That, in itself, is enough to bury her.

#2- With gas prices out of control, why would you want to put someone into office who is a stooge of the oil industry. As Theineman said yesterday:

As a member of Congress in 2005, she voted for a $14.5 billion tax break for Big Oil (H.R. 6, Vote 445), passing President Bush's energy bill that amounted to a giant hand-out for oil companies.

She helped her pals in the oil companies again later that year, voting against price gouging standards that would have prevented big oil from over-charging us for gasoline. (H.R. 3402, Vote 500).

It's no wonder. Anne Northup has received more than $300,000 in political contributions from Big Oil interests.

Northup is nothing but Mitch McConnell's pawn for the election this November. His crony at the NRCC was responsible for that phony poll showing a close race between Northup and Yarmuth back in January. Why did Mitch want Northup in the race? So she would at least spur a respectable turnout among Republicans in Louisville, thus helping Mitch tread water there in his race, which he thought would be against Andrew Horne.

So... sit back and grab the popcorn, and enjoy watching Northup lose her third race in 2 years and John Yarmuth make right-wingers heads explode in Louisville for many many years to come.

Bruce enters the Blogger Lion's Den (for some reason...)

Today, the Lunsford campaign invited bloggers to a conference call with Bruce Lunsford and Andrew Horne.

Yes, I was as baffled by that decision as I'm sure you are, too....

KY bloggers don't really.... well... like Bruce. At all, really. So jumping into the pit with us seamed pretty damn risky, but I at least give him credit for having the nerve to do it (if he even realized what he was getting into, and there is a strong posibility he didn't). He's just really fortunate that folks like Yellow Dog couldn't make it (Now, that would have been a scene!)

Anyway, not many folks picked him up on the offer, and the results were quite mixed.

In his opening statement, Bruce said that Mitch had been in Washington too long, and it has changed him. Andrew said exactly what he told me last night, that we need to keep our eye on the ball (Mitch), and it's quite obvious that no one else can compete with him in the primary at this point, so keep it clean, boys.

My first question was about this "change" that he talked about Mitch going through. I asked him what has changed about Mitch over the years, and what he used to like about him. Bruce steered WAY clear of the question, going back all the way to the days when he was a judge (early 80's), saying that he was more moderate back then. So I followed up asking him what has changed about Mitch in the last 10 years, what he liked about him back then that would make him give big big money to Mitch.

The answer he gave was a little odd. First of all, he mislead by saying he only gave $250 to McConnell. In actuality, he gave many thousands to the NRSC and PACs that helped McConnell. He never answered my question as to what he liked about McConnell back then. Then, it got a little weird. He mentioned that Elaine Chao was on the board of his company and he was looking out for his business. So.... was he saying that he gave to Mitch so he'd look after his company? What? I can't really believe he said that. Bad answer. Very.

Jake asked him how much he was going to spend on the race and Bruce completely avoided answering directly through two questions. He mentioned the millionaires amendment and that the DSCC was going to support him.

The DSCC? No friggin way, Bruce.

Jim Pence asked him how he would combat the old Chandler ads and the endorsement he gave to Fletcher in 2003. He said that he's apoligized before and made amends last year by staying positive and helping Beshear out big afterwards. He said that it was an emotional response to the Chandler ads, and it was a bad mistake. He also said that beating Mitch would certainly heal all wounds.

I went back to his DSCC comment and asked "Do you really think that Chuck Schumer is going to spend DSCC money on this race and not tell you to spend your own money?"

The response was short and abrupt- "I believe we'll both be happy with each other's participation." You just keep on thinking that, Bruce.

I asked him if he planned on actually attending and of the senate primary debates. He said that he would be attending the one on May 12th or 13th. Woot. Should be fun.

So that was that. I respect that he would go directly into the line of fire, but he's going to have to work on that "Mitch has changed" line. Explain to people why Mitch was good in 1997-8, but not now. And I'm quite certain that Bruce will spend his own money. A whole damn lot of it. Once he finds out that Schumer is a snake oil salesman that was recruiting him only because his zillions would tie up McConnell and leave him free to spend DSCC money on other races, he'll get the idea that he has to break open the giant piggy.

So, that's that. Thoughts?

Horne endorses Lunsford

Well, how about that?

Andrew Horne endorsed Bruce Lunsford this morning in Frankfort.

I talked to Andrew last night and he told me he was doing this soon (though not this morning, wow). His reasoning? After the SUSA poll came out, this, along with Fischer's refusal to spend any money, told him that Bruce is going to win the nomination, no matter what. With that being the case, his focus is on beating Mitch, and he wants his challenger to be as strong as possible. If Fischer or others started going negative on Lunsford, that was just going to give McConnell a head start against him.

In all honesty, this isn't too far from my feelings on the matter, lately.

The difference is that I'm not counting Fischer out just yet. I was going to write a post today saying that I was giving Fischer one week to open up his checkbook and try to compete, or else I was pulling the plug on him. A week from today, I'm imagining Clinton and Obama are going to start buying up ad time, and Fischer and his truly measly amount of money aren't going to be able to buy crap for ad time to build up his pathetic name ID.

So Greg, I'm giving you a week to see if you really want to challenge Lunsford by opening your checkbook, or if you're too scared too. Can't wait to find out.

An additional note- I find it odd when people say they're behind Fischer because Lunsford can't beat Mitch. I have long detailed Lunsford's huge, huge problem against Mitch. But the people who make this argument never explain why Fischer would fare better? Why, exactly, is that? I'm honestly curious in this answer, because they never back this up with anything. I'd love to hear from you.

The Least Shocking News Ever: Part VI

Nobody knows who the hell Greg Fisher is.

The new Senate poll is out in KY, and here is the awful truth:

Lunsford 42%
Wiliams 11%
Fischer 6%
Rice 5%
Wylie 5%
Cassarro 4%
Stepp 3%

NOTE TO THE FISCHER CAMPAIGN: TAKE MY ADVICE. NOW.

Greg, if you have any intention of even competing, (1)open your checkbook and start buying some damned ads. And (2)quit the passive aggressive stuff, challenge and call out Lunsford directly. And (3)get on the Obama train NOW.

Otherwise, quit wasting people's time, money and energy.

P.S. - 17% in the poll said they would vote for "other". We all know who that is, and he will still be on the ballot all over the state. As I said before, the guy never should have left the race.
